Ik heb al een tijdje gezocht via de zoekfunctie, maar kan nergens een topic vinden waar alle tips voor New Orleans op een rijte staan. Dus bij deze het verzoek: wat kunnen jullie ons aanraden voor 3 nachten New Orleans?

Bezienswaardigheden? Restaurants? Uitstapjes? Parken? Muziekvenues?

Als je onder mijn berichten kijkt zal je vast wat tips kunnen vinden, ik heb al een en ander geschreven over deze geweldige stad. Hieronder een aantal van mijn favorieten. Laat maar weten of je nog iets specefieks wilt weten, ik ga gemiddeld 2 keer per jaar naar New Orleans.

Figment, dat klinkt geweldig. Ik kijk momenteel ook naar een B&B in Faubourg Marigny en dat is zo te zien wel een leuke plek, vlakbij Frenchmen st. Heb er zo'n zin in!!

Bedoel je wellicht the Lamothe House en/of Frenchmen Hotel? Beide hotels heb ik overnacht en kan ik ten harte aanbevelen!

Ik bedoelde B&W Courtyards of Marigny Manor. Maar ik ga jouw suggesties nu ook even bekijken!

Petra, ik had je reisverslag al google-end al gevonden, daar ga ik zeker gebruik van maken!

De Maison St. Charles is ook een uitstekend hotel. Ligt op een klein kwartier wandelen buiten het centrum (of op vijf minuutjes met het trammetje). Geweldige stad, New Orleans. Vergeet ook niet om een boottocht te maken op de Mississippi.

Een boottocht over de Mississippi kan ik zeker niet aanraden. Tenminste, als het met steamboat the Natchez is. Je vaart voornamelijk langs industriegebied, het eten is vrij belabberd en ik vind het hele gebeuren erg duur voor wat je in feite krijgt. Zonde van de tijd, helemaal als je er maar een dag of wat te besteden hebt. Wat ik wel kan aanraden is een tochtje met de gratis ferry naar Algiers (deze vind je ongeveer ten hoogte van Audubon Aquarium). Op deze manier kan je toch de 'skyline' van New Orleans zien en Algiers is leuk om even rond te dwalen.

Hebben jullie inmiddels al een hotel/B&B gevonden? De Marigny is een super gezellige wijk, een aanrader om te overnachten!

We gaan dit weekend verder puzzelen voor een B&B maar ik denk zeker dat de Marigny onze voorkeur heeft. Ik heb inmiddels al een heel lijstje, nu moet mijn vriend nog even kiezen Weet jij toevallig of parkeren in de Marigny een beetje te doen is?

We hebben zojuist een reserveringsaanvraag gedaan bij B&W Courtyards in de Marigny. Ik hoop dat het lukt (komt vast goed) want het ziet er erg knus uit!

Bij onze reservering in de B&B hebben we ook een document ontvangen met tips voor in New Orleans. Heel erg leuk voor de voorpret en om dit topic nog wat meer informatie voor anere te geven, dacht ik het maar 'even' met jullie te delen...

Aquatic Gardens is our local nursery and they specialize in water gardens. They represent a great introduction to our
way of life and you'll get some ideas and maybe a treasure to take home. Just don't blame us if you get home and start digging a big hole in the back yard!

We like to browse through the French Market. We like to stop by and see what Brian and Marcy have created at Fifi Mahoneys wigs at 934 Royal. WOW! LaMina, is our friend Pancho’s silver shop. I love his Fleur de Lis cufflinks, 840 Royal Street. We like the hats, alligator cufflinks, SPARKLY pins and cool shirts at Susan & Elliott’s place, Shuhan’s on Jackson Square, 536 Saint Peter. Up Royal is M.S. Rau 630 Royal for the most over the top antique store in the city. It's
like going to a museum sale. Ask to see the micro mosaics in the "back room". We love the architecture, the art and
antique shops, the specialty clothing and cooking shops...it feels like "Old New Orleans". By late afternoon it's time for a café au laít and some beignets (ben yays) at Café Du Monde, across the street from Jackson Square. There is some pretty funky people watching goin' on down there...Where do these people come from??? DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT
use the bathroom at Café Du Monde!! Just trust me on this!

In the spring and fall we like to walk over to the Omni Royal Orleans, 621 St. Louis, And sneak up to their rooftop pool/bar. They have the most wonderful view of the Quarter from there. Just act like you own the place and take the elevator to the top floor.

Saturday is a great day to explore Magazine Street. Magazine Street is 5 plus miles of antique shops, junque shops, cafes, hip boutiques and plain old FUN! Take a cab to the 2000 block and start heading away from the city, 2100 ,2200, etc. We like As You Like It Silver 3033 Magazine. If you're missing a piece of grandma's silver they'll have it or know where
to get it. Dunn & Sonnier has swell antiques and gifts at 2738 Magazine. Perch is a really cool store at 2844 Magazine…just ask for Jack. Lilette, 3637 Magazine is probably the "Frenchest", if there is a word, bistro in town. Love their pork belly.

Back closer to us in what we officially call the American Sector, at Julia and Magazine, are loads of art galleries and New Orleans Auction, GASP! Usually, unless they're setting up for an auction, we walk through to look at the auction items. Holy Mackerel! They have some FINE STUFF! Looking down Magazine from New Orleans Auction, back toward our house is New Orleans School of Glass 727 Magazine. We are producing some wonderful glass and it's FREE to go back into the
studio/furnace area and watch the glass blowers. This part of town has the Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp, The National World War II Museum, 925 Camp, and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 925 Magazine. Also, 3 of Donald Link’s restaurants are in this neighborhood, Cochon 930 Tchoupitoulas Street, The Butcher Shop…OMG! Behind Cochon on Andrew
Higgins, and one of my favorite restaurants in town, Herbsaint, 701 Saint Charles Avenue.

Don’t forget about the Audubon Institute. They have the Aquarium of the Americas at the river and Canal Street. The IMAXX Theatre with THE BËST AIRCONDITIONER in the city. The Insectarium at 423 Canal is really cool. And, of course a world class Zoo at Audubon Park. The Swamp Exhibit at the Zoo is considered one of the top ten zoo exhibits in the country.
Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World is fun for the family and is located at the far end of the Convention Center.

The Gallier House at 1118 Royal Street is a remarkable look at 19th century life inside one of the city's most famous architect's home. Up the street is the Historic New Orleans Collection...really cool stuff, but leaning more toward the
"Studious" type of personality. City Park is beautiful and has The New Orleans Museum of Art. Straight out Esplanade, either take a cab or take the Canal Street streetcar. Next to the museum is the Bestoff Sculpture Garden with a world-class collection of sculpture, and behind that is the Botanical Garden. City Park offers a delightful less touristy look at the city.

And don’t forget about a tour of the Garden District. All of the numbered streets off St. Charles are considered the
Garden District. We recommend going to the mini mall at Prytania and Washington and hooking up with a walking tour guide. The St Charles Streetcar is a must do. It would be like going to San Francisco and not riding the cable cars if you missed the St Charles Streetcar. It costs $1.25 each time you get on. The streetcar drivers are INFLEXIBLE...you must
have EXACT change! Just remember, it's STREETCAR, not trolley, not cable car, STREETCAR, like Desire!

The Columns Hotel at 3811 St Charles has a terrific front porch where it would be a good idea to sip a Pimms Cup. Ride the streetcar up to Carrollton, the BIG RIGHT HAND TURN. Get off and have lunch at the Camellia Grill, 6265. Carrollton.

Now I know you want a restaurant list out of me! How can you come to New Orleans and not love to eat? I've mentioned several of our favorites, but here's more. During high convention season it is best to make reservations one
month before your arrival. If your grandparents ate at the Court of Two Sisters in 1949...News Flash!!...it's
not the same; it's a tourist trap. And, $55 for Eggs Benedict at "Breakfast at Brennan's is outrageous to us, it'd better be the golden egg. Commander's Palace and Mr. B's are not what they used to be. We find Emeril's restaurants to be way
over-priced. August is just plain WOW! My two favorite places in town now...subject to change, are Lilette and Herbsaint.

MUSIC
Loads of music in town, Great impromptu performances on the street and at Jackson Square. The House of Blues (225 Decatur) has the $$$ to bring in the big names. Tipitina's [504 Napoleon) is a New Orleans tradition. Stand in line for great
music at Preservation Hall (726 St. Peter). Of course, gobs of very loud music on Bourbon. We like the Palm Court 1204
Decatur), and we love Rock N Bowl Zydeco night on Thursdays 3000 S. Carrollton, take a cab. But our favorite places are all on Frenchman Street just 3 blocks from our house. Spotted Cat, DBA, 3 Muses is getting great reviews too.
One Eyed Jacks at 615 Toulouse in the Quarter has some unique shows and a friendly staff.

Fijn dat de reservering is gelukt! En wat leuk dat ze zo'n uitgebreide 'must do' lijst hebben gestuurd! En helemaal leuk om te zien dat de tips die ik altijd aan iedereen geef, ook hier worden genoemd!

Ja, dat viel me ook al op, dat er allemaal dingen in staan die jij ook al genoemd had! Ik moest er wel erg om lachen: had eerst al een kwartier met die man aan de telefoon gezeten en toen kwam er ook nog zo'n waslijst aan tips! Ik voel me in ieder geval erg welkom en heb er zin in!

Ik zat even alle tips op te schrijven voor alle steden die we aandoen. En toevallig heb ik laatst via Groupon een bon gekocht voor een rondleiding op een van deze cemeteries, die zijn wel een aanrader dus?

Ik vond New Orleans eerlijk gezegd niets aan. Het French Quarter, waar alle toeristen heen moeten volgens de gidsen, vond ik erg alternatief. Veel muzikanten, galerieën en ondefinieerbare winkeltjes. Maar goed, daar kunnen sommige mensen van houden.

Maar wat niemand kan ontgaan is dat veel buurten best asociaal zijn. Vooral rond Bourbon Street. Vreselijk. Keiharde muziek uit alle tentjes, pornofoto’s aan de muur van een zaak, en bovendien stinkt het er. Ik vond het onbeschaafd, asociaal en lelijk. En ik kom er nooit meer terug.

Bovendien heb ik in geen enkele stad zoveel hiphop-types gezien met afgezakte broeken, een luie houding, koptelefoons en elkaar aanspreken met ‘nigger’. Ik vond dat eerlijk gezegd weinig verheffend. Net als de toeristenwinkels waar je shirts kon kopen met wiet-logo’s, middelvingers etc.

Nee, New Orleans hoeft voor mij niet.
