Hello everybody,

I am a Biomedical Sciences student from the University of Amsterdam. In the fall semester of 2007 I would like to start my PhD in the same field in or around San Francisco.
In order to do this I have to go through the difficult and lengthy process of applying at several grad schools, and they're hard to get into. I was wondering if anybody knows, is or was a grad student at a grad school in California and can help/advise me here. Getting funding (through the departement, or your own), translation of grades (where did you do it, and how did everything translate?), GRE (I already did the general, now still have to do the subject one), TOEFL (easy, I hear) visiting them, the interview(s), meeting requirements etc.

I would to ask someone who has first hand experience, but any help is very welcome and appreciated, because, man, this is going to be a lot of work, and I'd like to be better prepared!

P.S. I will have already obtained my Masters degree by then (aiming for March 2007), and my degree includes 1 year and 3 months of research at Washington University in St. Louis.

Hi,
I am starting biomedical PhD education at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) this September. I have a MSc degree from Utrecht University. I made special arrangements so that I will not have to pay tuition, don't have to take classes, etc. Plus, I did not have to take TOEFL or GRE, and I did not have to go trhough the official selection procedure (no writing of a statement of purpose, etc).
If you send me a personal message with some more info (I am Dutch by the way, so English is not necessary), I can give you advice on the application procedure, selecting a lab, grant writing, etc. (I don't want all this information available on this forum).

Please note that UCSF no longer accepts foreign students for the tetrad program!

I might be able to help you out. I am running an education consultancy in the Netherlands called "UStudy - Educational Services for the USA" and can help you get through the process of selecting challenging programs and of applying to grad schools. En tja, in het Nederlands, ik wilde het maar open houden voor al die mensen die ook grad schools doen, maar niet zo goed zijn in Nederlands, je weet maar nooit wie dit leest, en wij zijn allemaal wel goed genoeg in het Engels om m'n berichtje te snappen. Dus sorry, ik ging voor het grotere publiek.

Niet helemaal hoor, bedoel.. ik ga graag op vakantie naar Amerika (in mei 2007 voor de vierde keer) maar ik beheers helaas m'n Engels toch niet zo heel goed..

Hi Liensel,


Hoe was of is je ervaring met Wash U.

Ben wel benieuwd naar je verhaal en hoe je het allemaal gaat regelen. Ik heb me eerlijk gezegd te weinig verdiept in scholarships and grants, maar vind het wel interessant hoe dat allemaal in elkaar zit.
Ik ben geen graduate material maar overweeg om in de toekomst misschien aan een masters degree te gaan beginnen en kan alle info gebruiken.

Mijn ervaring bij Wash U is erg goed, ik ben blij dat ik voor deze stage heb gekozen! Wash U's onderzoek staat landelijk heel erg goed bekend, al varieert dat natuurlijk van departement tot departement. Dus daarvan is het ook afhankelijk of je voor Wash U kiest of voor het iets toegankelijker SLU. Voor mij was die keuze in Nederland gemaakt, als in mijn begeleider daar kent mijn begeleider hier nu. Qua fondsen ben ik in Nederland heel erg hard aan het aanschrijven geweest, wat ook zeker heeft geholpen, heel erg blij mee, en zeker de (enorme!) moeite waard, echt, doen! Maar of je daar in amerika wat aan hebt? Ik weet dat beursopener.nl een grote is voor dat soort gelden, maar als je al hier woont, ik weet niet in hoeverre je dan nog gesponsord kunt worden door nederlandse fondsen. Misschien kun je fastweb scholarship proberen op http://www.fastweb.com of het even googlen.
Tuition zul je misschien zelf moeten betalen, als je geen fellowship op de kop kunt tikken. Maar misschien ben je een minderheid, of nog wel voor een Nederlands fonds vatbaar, of iets anders. Als je je verdiept heb je met een middagdagje zoeken zeker een hele lijst fondsen, dus dat zal zeker helpen voor geld. En dan aanbevelingsbrieven verzamelen en motivatiebrieven schrijven, die laatste moeten vooral heel specifiek zijn. Maar hoe het werkt met binnenkomen als je je Masters gaat doen, en niet zomaar een simpele stage, dat weet ik niet. Zou zomaar kunnen dat ze je interviewen...
Ik denk dat je dat wel moet kunnen vinden op http://www.wustl.edu (de wash u site) en dan graduate admissions, en dan Master students of prospective students. Succes!
