We flew into Austin, and spent a few days there (including a day in Hill Country). We also went to the outlet mall (one of the BEST besides the Cabazon mall near Palm Springs) However, it was about 34C, and we did not stay long as it is an outdoor mall. Did a HIll Country loop when the Blue Bonnets were blooming (around Easter) It was one of their best years in the past 10 and Stunning.
Drove from Austin to Del Rio and overnighted there. Hampton Inn is really good, great service. Then from Del Rio to Terlingua. We stayed at an Inn in Terlingua, so not sure about the camping. It's a weird little village, with characters much like Slab City.
Then drove past San Antonio (did not stop) and took the I90 along the Mexican border to Big Bend, Big Bend State Park, up through to Marfa and flew out of El Paso.
We toured Big Bend for a couple of days. We did not end up hiking at that time as it was very hot for us - about 33C every day. So we car toured instead. Drove through Big Bend State Park, and did some hiking there into a slot canyon, very cool. Overnighted at Cibolo Creek Ranch, about an 1/2 hour south of Marfa.
This is the forum where I got a lot of information. You'll find plenty of camping info there

Marfa is EXTREMELY cool. There's a arty subculture that's camped out there, many artists who got sick of NYC. You have to visit the Prada Store near there. Also, eat at Food Shark - a food truck that's got a whole following. The food is excellent. Loved Marfa and would return in a heartbeat. Actually, I would do that whole trip over again, we met so many friendly and interesting people.
