California announces closures of 70 state parks

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 13, 2011 -- Friday the 13th has brought some bad news to users of California State Parks. State officials announced the closure today of 70 parks because of the state budget deficit. Many of the parks include campgrounds -- a blow to RVers and other campers. The parks will begin cutting down services this summer. Shutdowns will begin in September with all the parks on the hit list to close by July 2012.

Gov. Jerry Brown's January budget plan proposed reducing the state parks budget by $22 million. In March, the legislature approved $11 million in cuts to state parks and $10 million in cuts to off highway vehicle parks in the next fiscal year, with $22 million in cuts to state parks in future years.

The California State Parks System was directed to identify which parks would close based on attendance rates and historical significance. The department operates more than 270 state park units.

"We regret closing any park," Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks, said in a statement. "But with the proposed budget reductions over the next two years, we can no longer afford to operate all parks within the system."

The department said service reductions will begin over the summer and closures will begin in September. All parks on the list are to be padlocked by July 1, 2012 under the current budget proposal. The cuts have not yet been signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, so a final list could grow or shrink based on the actions the legislature takes to close the budget deficit.

Parks officials said they tried to protect the most significant cultural and natural resources, while maintaining the parks that provided the most public access and state revenue. In addition, the department intends to seek partnership agreements with local governments and non-profits in attempt to keep some of the parks open. They said 92 percent of total park attendance will be retained and 94 percent of existing revenues even with the closures.

Besides the recently renovated Stanford Mansion and the Governor's Mansion state historic parks, both in downtown Sacramento, the list includes Brannan Island State Recreation Area in Sacramento County and Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park and South Yuba River State Park in Nevada County.

Ben even gaan kijken op de website van de State Parks van California, en daar wordt het inderdaad bevestigd:

Rechts staat zo'n oranje blok met "Park closure list" op, en dan opent zich een pdf met meer uitleg en de opsomming van die 70 parken.

Natuurlijk triest omn te lezen, maar met ons mei/juni bezoek zijn wij in ieder geval nog net op tijd.

Valt best mee toch? Als je goed leest zie je er nog steeds geen groot National Park bij staan. Ze zullen echt wel oppassen om de grote stroom bezoekers naar de grootste en bekendste parken aan de gang te houden, tenslotte levert dat weer geld op om de boel aan de gang te houden.

Wij gaan in Juli, en maken ons echt geen zorgen.....

@Ronald 46, het gaat hier ook niet om de Nationale parken maar om de State parks, als je eenmaal een aantal keer in de VS bent geweest zijn dat nou juist de parken waar je dan tijd voor hebt omdat je de grote NP's allemaal al gezien hebt, het is toch jammer dat er daar een groot aantal van gaat sluiten.

Harry, ben ik het helemaal mee eens hoor. Ik bedoelde meer dat "gelukkig" er niets mis is met de grote parken. Al een aantal jaren geleden stond er namelijk een stuk in de Nederlandse National Geographic dat de grote National Parks ook al behoorlijk onder druk stonden qua budget. Vandaar mijn reactie Het had maar zo gekund dat ze daar waren gaan snijden.

Maar goed, heel jammer van die kleinere.... er staan er zeker een aantal tussen die, als je de tijd hebt, erg interessant zijn om te bezoeken.

Jammer zeg, dat ze die parken voorlopig gaan sluiten! Gelukkig waren wij bij onze reis in september niet van plan om één van deze State Parks te bezoeken maar super balen voor de mensen die dat wel op de planning hebben staan! Nouja, dat wordt afwachten dan, hopelijk gaat het meevallen...

Ik schrok even, Del Norte Coast Redwoods SP staat op onze lijst voor deze zomer. Maar even op reserveamerica.com gekeken en zag: Alert - Important Information: There are no parks planned for closure in 2011. We are continuing to take reservations for the 2011 season.

Wel ongelofelijk triest dat dit park - een World Heritage Site nota bene - en al die andere prachtige parken in 2012 gesloten worden.

Er was een item over in "This Week in Northern California" van KQED (PBS).

Ik denk en hoop dat de aankondiging een pressiemiddel is om het belastingplan erdoor te krijgen wat Gov. Brown op het stembiljet wil krijgen. Zoals ze in dat item aangeven zitten er best veel haken en ogen aan het sluiten van sommige parken, en is de werkelijke besparing waarschijnlijk gering. De parken zijn populair bij mensen met hogere inkomens, en die groep heeft tot nu toe weinig van de bezuinigingen gemerkt. Die mensen worden nu dus wat meer wakkergeschudt.
