March 28, 2007 - The Official Public Opening Of The Skywalk

Grand Canyon West, a destination owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon’s western rim, announces March 28, 2007 as the official public opening date of The Skywalk. The Skywalk will be the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim.
Access to The Skywalk will run from dawn to dusk and will cost $25 per person in addition to the cost of a Grand Canyon West entrance package. One hundred and twenty people will be allowed on the bridge at a time. Admittance is first come, first serve for walk up visitors; however, reservations can be made. Guests will enter and exit the walkway via temporary buildings while the adjacent visitor’s
center is being completed. Grand Canyon West plans to issue numbered shoe covers – in order to avoid scratches and slipping - to each visitor that enters the open-air walkway.
Prior to the public opening in March, Grand Canyon West will host a “First Walk” event for media and VIPs. The name of the first public figure to step on The Skywalk will be announced closer to the opening.
The historical rollout of The Skywalk structure, with the glass in place, is scheduled for February 27 to March 2. The initial part of the rollout process involves jacking the structure up off of the supports and then subjecting the structure to several days of thorough tests that replicate the conditions of final placement. After the final testing is complete, the multi-million pound steel enforced structure will be rolled out across the canyon’s edge, which takes multiple days. Immediately after the structure is in position, it will be seated and attached to the foundation. Details for a media event during the rollout will be revealed closer to the event.
Located at Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point, The Skywalk facility will also include a 6,000 square-foot visitor’s center on three levels – underground, first story and second story – which will contain a museum, movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shop, and several restaurants and bars, including a high-end restaurant called The Skywalk Café that will offer outdoor patio and rooftop seating on the edge of the canyon. The second story will be where visitors can access The Skywalk glass walkway. The visitor’s center will also offer private indoor and outdoor facilities for meetings, special events and weddings.

Gaat dit niet over een excursie vanaf een bepaalde plaats naar de Skywalk? Van wie kreeg je dit antwoord?
Ik heb nl ook gelezen dat als je er met eigen vervoer heen rijdt, dat dan de entreekosten $ 25 dollar p.p. zijn. Dat vond ik ook al behoorlijk, maar had inmiddels al wel besloten om het te doen met z'n tweetjes komende vakantie in het voorjaar.
Ik zal nog eens op zoek gaan. In ieder geval bedankt voor de informatie.
Valt nog mee, eerst dachten ze aan $ 95,--. Ik heb gehoord dat je 2000 ft naar beneden kijkt. Scheelt nogal wat met de 5000 ft in het NP. Ik zal hier dit jaar waarschijnlijk toch niet naar toe gaan. Lijkt me toch een soort verminking. Maar misschien zijn de reakties op het forum wel overweldigend. Ben benieuwd.

Nablo. Ik heb haar inmiddels terug gemaild en gevraagd wat de 'package' inhoudt en of er inderdaad andere opties zijn omdat ik begrepen had dat
het $25 zou zijn.
Bij de gegevens die je in moet vullen als je wilt reserveren vragen ze
oa. ook 'type of tour package' dus daarmee wekken ze de indruk dat
er meerdere packages zijn, toch?

Je hebt helemaal gelijk - ik had m'n antwoord al getikt voor ik door had dat je al uitgebreide info gegeven had. Excuses! Zal de link later op de
avond even goed doornemen.
Aan de ene kant snap ik wel dat 'men' het dure pakket aanbiedt maar
het zou wel zo eerlijk zijn om te melden dat er ook andere (goedkopere)
opties zijn.
Vannacht antwoord gehad. Zij noemt ook dit x geen prijs voor het puur
alleen bezoeken van de SKywalk, volgens haar zijn de 25 Dollar een
'add on' voor bepaalde tours/packages.
Heb 'r net terug gemaild en gevraagd of er ook een mogelijkheid is
om alleen de Skywalk te bezoeken, oa omdat we simpelweg geen tijd
hebben om daar 5 uur te spenderen.
Thank you for your email. The Sky package includes all activities listed below. The $25 is an add on option fee to the entry packages that do not include the skywalk. For example, all of the overnight packages do not include the skywalk but it can be added for $25.
The reservations are made for the day. There is not a specific time to book the Skywalk. However, please make sure you allow yourself at least 5 hrs to enjoy all the activities with out feeling rushed. When were you planning to visit? The hours of operation are from 8am – dusk.

dus dan zit je op 75 Dollar.
Er is nog een package van 30 Euro maar daar kun je de Skywalk niet
bij boeken dus ik vrees dat er ook geen mogelijkheid is om alleen de
Skywalk te bezoeken voor 25 Dollar ... ???
Tuurlijk kun je een package boeken, naar de Skywalk gaan en daarna
verder met je reis en de rest van de package skippen mahja, dan wordt
de Skywalk wel een duur 'grapje'.

Het is een Indianenreservaat. Je hebt dus een Permit nodig om daar te mogen komen. En aangezien het hun bron van inkomsten is zorgen ze er wel voor dat je een minimum bedrag daar moet uitgeven.
HUALAPAI INDIAN RESERVATION, Ariz. - A struggling Indian tribe is hoping to change its fortunes by luring tourists out over the edge of the Grand Canyon on a glass-bottom observation deck 4,000 feet above the Colorado River.
It's called the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped walkway that will jut from the canyon's lip and offer the kind of straight-down, vertigo-inducing views that had previously been available only to the likes of Wile E. Coyote.
"We have to do something, and this is something spectacular," said Sheri Yellowhawk, a former tribal councilwoman overseeing the project.
But the $30 million Skywalk, financed by a Las Vegas businessman and set to open in March, has also ignited a debate among Hualapai elders who question whether the prospect of riches is worth disturbing sacred ground.
The Hualapai (pronounced WALL-uh-pie) believe their ancestors emerged from the earth of the Grand Canyon, and the area surrounding the project is scattered with the tribe's sacred archaeological and burial sites.
"We have disturbed the ground," said Dolores Honga, a 70-year-old tribal elder who regularly travels to the rim to perform traditional dances. She said workers on the Skywalk site often complain to her about nightmares.
"Our people, they died right along the land there. Their blood, their bones were shattered. They blend into the ground. It's spiritual ground. This is why you're awakened," Honga said.
But other elders say the Hualapai have to do something to end the despair and joblessness that plague the tribe's 2,200 members, more than a third of whom live below the poverty line.
In 1995, the tribe's only casino folded after foundering for seven months. Tourists were in no mood to travel 21 miles over an unpaved road to gamble on the reservation — especially not when Las Vegas is just 2 1/2 hours away by car.
Four years later, the tribe invited daredevil Robbie Knievel to jump a side canyon on his motorcycle, hoping the stunt would raise publicity for the reservation as a tourism destination. (He made it across without breaking any bones.)
But years later the tribe's river rafting and horseback riding operations still draw far fewer visitors than Grand Canyon National Park, about 90 miles to the east.
Planned as an audacious feat of engineering, the Skywalk will be cantilevered 70 feet out past the canyon's limestone walls. It will be open to the sky, with glass walls and a glass floor.
It will be supported by steel beams anchored 46 feet into the rock on the lip of the canyon. At 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, it will give visitors a vantage point more than twice as high as the world's tallest buildings. At that height, the Colorado River will be just a thin brown ribbon.
Architect Mark Johnson said the Skywalk will be built to withstand canyon winds of 100 mph and will be capable of holding a few hundred people without bending. It will have shock absorbers to keep it from wobbling up and down like a diving board and making people woozy.
"Hopefully it will give people some security," Johnson said. "They've got a little meat under them."
Construction began in April 2005.
The Grand Canyon Trust, one of the chief protectors of the canyon, has not raised any environmental or aesthetic objections to the Skywalk, which will be almost invisible from a distance because it will be mostly see-through, and will look puny against the gargantuan canyon walls.
"This is the future of the Hualapai nation," said Allison Raskansky, a Las Vegas public relations specialist for the project. "This is a view you cannot get at the national park."
The Hualapai are completely dependent on the 345,000 visitors who come to the reservation each year to tour the tribe's end of the canyon by boat or helicopter. Grand Canyon National Park, by comparison, gets 4.1 million visitors a year.
In 1996, David Jin, a Las Vegas businessman originally from Shanghai, China, approached the Hualapai with a plan to build a skywalk with his own money. Jin already was operating a business that brought Chinese tourists onto the reservation.
"Our thinking is that, if a human being could walk over the canyon, if they had the opportunity, even handicapped people, it's just really, really, you know, something," Jin said.
Under the plan, the Hualapais will own the Skywalk, but Jin will collect up to half of the money from ticket sales for the next 25 years.
Tribal member Connie Powskey, 56, hopes the tribe raises enough money to help her children get an education and find jobs. Then maybe it will eventually be seen as a blessing.
"When you get old, they put needles in you and give you things so you can survive," Powskey said. "Well, that's like this now for Mother Nature. Is it worth it? I don't know. I really don't."

Ikzelf heb ook zoiets van: moet je wel zo'n attractie daar neerzetten?
Tuurlijk brengt het geld en extra toerisme met zich mee maar het natuuraspect en vooral het eeuwenoude geloofsaspect van deze mensen telt ook!
Heel dubbel en moeilijk, maargoed het feit is er dat hij er al hangt en dat hij open gaat....
Ik hoop dat ze de gasten vriendelijk ontvangen en eerst alles schoonmaken. Daar ontbreekt het nog wel eens aan. Ik denk niet dat hun geloofsovertuiging erin voorziet dat het regelmatig een puinhoop (afval)is in de reservaten. Met uitzondering van de Sioux, Hopi's en Apaches vonden wij veel reservaten niet erg gastvrij. Of je laat gasten toe of niet, maar wij hebben wel eens moeite gehad met de gastonvriendelijkheid op diverse plaatsen. En daar gaven we toch echt geen aanleiding toe.

Daar zitten meer 'attracties' bij dan alleen de Skywalk maar
we zien ter plaatse wel of we daar gebruik v maken, ligt ook

Tis inderdaad aan de prijs maar een helicoptervlucht door de
Grand Canyon kost ook geld en aangezien ik dat niet durf ...

Mag ik vragen waar je dat geboekt hebt en waarvandaan deze excursie start en eindigt? Ook ben ik benieuwd of dit een hele of een halve dag excursie is.
Zelf ben ik ook van plan om naar de Skywalk te gaan, maar dan op eigen gelegenheid. Voor zover ik heb begrepen zou dan de toegang iets van $ 25 kosten.

De Skywalk zelf kost $ 25 maar volgen mij heb je ook nog een Hualapai Visitation Permit nodig en die kost $ 29,95 volgens de site.
Voor zover ik uit heb kunnen vissen kun je niet "op eigen gelegenheid" naar de Skywalk, entree betalen en de walk doen. Je moet een bepaalde
tour kopen: de tour van 50 Dollar is exlc de Skywalk en dan betaal je 25 Dollar extra om de Skywalk te kunnen doen.
Als je de tour van 75 Dollar boekt zit de Skywalk er al bij dus in die zin is het lood om oud ijzer, je bent altijd 75 Dollar kwijt.
Ik heb meerdere malen met ene Karen gemaild, zij werkt voor de organisatie achter de Skywalk. Ik heb iedere keer antwoord gehad
en ze was erg vriendelijk en duidelijk.
Onze 'package' houdt meer in dan alleen de Skywalk en we kunnen
vanaf 7 uur sochtends terecht maar mogen ook pas om 14 uur aan
komen zetten - je bent in die zin vrij om te gaan & staan waar je wilt.
Er zit bv ook een maaltijd bij inbegrepen in 1 van de dorpjes.
Voor zover ik weet moeten we ons bij de west-ingang melden, daar
moeten we het reserverings-nr melden en dan hebben we dus toegang
tot het reservaat incl allerlei viewpoints, demonstraties én de Skywalk!
