Hallo allemaal, half oktober zouden wij vliegen naar Miami om een weekje naar de Keys te gaan. Ivm Irma weten wij nu nog niet hoe de situatie over 4 weken is. We willen dus de vlucht naar Miami door laten gaan (kunnen ook niet zo maar annuleren) en dan de andere kant op gaan. Wat raden jullie aan? We hebben al een heel stuk Florida gehad, maar we willen nu wel beetje in de regio Miami blijven.

Denk dat je het af moet laten hangen van de situatie op dat moment. Er komen wellicht nog meer orkanen over. Zelf ga ik 10 oktober ook die kant uit en ben 'n rondje van plan vanuit Atlanta en Smoky Mountains, maar wil ook 'n stukje Florida meenemen (Crystal River, Orlando, St. Augustine) en nog naar Savannah en Charleston. Hopelijk komt er in die tijd geen storm/regenfront over het zuidoosten, want anders moet ik toch 'n andere route verzinnen. Al mijn hotels zijn 24 uur van te voren nog annuleerbaar, dus ik kan flexibel zijn.

Weet iemand of Naples nog goed te doen is? Gaan we vandaar naar het noorden en Orlando.

Clearwater heeft ook behoorlijk wat schade gehad maar lang niet zoveel als Naples en de Keys. Tampa en Clearwater hebben normaal gesproken mooie blauwe stranden. Definitief alternatief is moeilijk aan te geven. We zitten midden in Orkaan seizoen en die schijnt daat jaar behoorlijk heftig te zijn. Dus het is allemaal afwachten, niets zo onvoorspelbaar als een orkaan. Misschien in Miami landen en dan per dag kijken welke kant je die dag opgaat?

Ik had het eerder vandaag ook al in de topic van Miquel aangegeven, maar de Keys gaan deze zondag weer open voor toeristen, 3 weken eerder dan gepland. Diverse cruiseschepen zijn alweer aan- en afgemeerd, het vliegveld is al weer even open en de overseas highway is veilig. Er is overal weer water(op 2 kleinere Keys na) en voor 95% elektra in de Lower Keys t/m Key West, in het noordelijk deel is het volledige netwerk weer op gang.

Mocht je er voor kiezen om te gaan, check dan wel je accommodatie. Niet alle hotels zijn al 100% operationeel.

Hoi hoi ik weet niet hoe je reist maar wellicht heb je iets aan onze reis? Wij hebben ook wat zaken omgegooid; Er zijn veel mooie plekken in het midden en noorden van de staat. Het is ook een beetje wat je wil. In Tampa/ St petersburg/ Sarasota/ Tarpon Springs is zowel wat cultuur als natuur te vinden. Caldesi en Honeymoon Island, Hillsborough SP en Myakka River State Park
Boven Orlando zijn ook nogal wat State Parks met Springs (Blue Springs, Wewaki Springs, Alexander Springs en nog meer..)

Sebastian Inlet
In 1715, a fleet of Spanish galleons foundered in a hurricane and crashed into the rocky shoals offshore Sebastian Inlet. Ever since the first archaeological discovery offshore, the glimmer of gold has attracted divers looking for their own buried treasure. Along A1A inside the park, the McLarty Treasure Museum showcases finds from dives on the treasure fleet, most notably the Atocha.
The Sebastian Fishing Museum, also inside the park, features the history of fishing in this region – and some fine fishing it is. Anglers cast off a lengthy pier reaching out into the pounding Atlantic Ocean, hoping for snook, redfish, and Spanish mackerel. Surfers ride the waves, which seem to never end, thanks to the swift flow of water through the inlet.
The islands are slender here, so the boom of the waves echoes throughout the park. A large campground sits along the calm waterfront of the Indian River Lagoon, with easy access to launch a kayak.Canoes and kayaks can be paddled to islands and along the mangrove-fringed shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon. Scuba diving and snorkeling are permitted in all of the waters of Sebastian Inlet State Park, with the exception of under the Sebastian Inlet Bridge and in the boat channel. Rock reefs stretch for miles starting south of Sebastian Inlet in the nearshore waters. Water visibility is best in the summer months. All divers and snorkelers must be within 100 feet of a dive flag. Spearfishing is prohibited.
For a relaxing stroll, take a walk down the Hammock Trail. This mile-long nature trail meanders under the shade of a coastal, sub-tropical, palm/oak hammock and along the fringe of the mangroves. Plant identification signs tell about many of the unique species in this habitat. A 10-km Volksport walking trail begins on the north side of the park at the Inlet Concession. The walking trail goes on the jetty, down the beach, around the cove, down part of the nature trail and partly on a paved walking/bike path. The Volksport trail covers most of the north side of Sebastian Inlet State Park. Get the map here.


http://floridahikes.com/centennial Pelican Island isn’t just a National Wildlife Refuge, it’s the National Wildlife Refuge that started the whole concept going, back in 1903. Even further back, in 1858, the small island in the Indian River Lagoon – offshore from where the refuge access is today – was documented as a brown pelican breeding ground.
Hike
The whole reason to take this little hike, of course, is for the birds. An extensive history is presented on the refuge website, but to sum it up, a local homesteader, Paul Kroegel, made it his mission to stand guard over the nesting pelicans back in the late 1880s. When it was discovered that the island was the last breeding ground for brown pelicans on the East Coast of Florida, the Florida Audubon Society hired Krogel to do what he was already doing—protecting the birds from hunters. There were no laws against hunting them. Based on Audubon’s findings, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an order to designate Pelican Island as the first Federal bird reservation, the first time the government set aside land for wildlife. Krogel became its first manager.
You’ll see your share of birds on this short walk. Our first sighting started with the impoundment adjacent to the welcome and historical kiosk. A black skimmer was showing off its skimming behavior, swooping low to the water and shoveling it up with his bill. It was worth some time on a trailside bench to watch his technique. The trail winds away from the impoundment and along the edge of a wetland you’d expect to see along the Indian River Lagoon, with cabbage palms and tall grasses.
As the paved path rounds a bend past a kiosk on the history of the National Wildlife Refuge system, it reaches the Centennial Boardwalk. Look underfoot as you head up this long, long ramp. The names and dates founded of each of the National Wildlife Refuges are listed, although some have faded in the sun or through the wear of foot traffic. Looking down and out, you’ll see a mangrove lined canal popular with herons and egrets. Alligators lie in wait just beneath the surface along the brackish mud flats. A cormorant might be drying its wings while perched on a mangrove.
At the end of the boardwalk is a covered observation deck with two free telescopes for viewing Pelican Island. It doesn’t look like much, just one of the hundreds of mangrove-covered islands in the Indian River Lagoon, but it’s a nesting area for brown pelicans. And at the time that was discovered, back in 1903, there weren’t a lot of brown pelicans left. Use your own binoculars or the telescope to sweep over Pelican Island and its adjacent islands. You’ll see all sorts of avian life, from ospreys to green herons to the pelicans themselves doing pelican dives into the shallows in search of a meal. Spend a little time here, enjoying the view, the breeze, and the bird life. And be thankful that more than a century ago, our forefathers had the foresight to start saving habitat for species that were disappearing. I hope we continue to walk in their footsteps.

After a brief ferryboat ride winding through mangrove islands along Dunedin Sound, you arrive at the Caladesi Island dock. Most visitors pile out and head straight down the boardwalk for the beach, but being an inquisitive hiker, you’d like to see the rest of the island first. This particular walk around the trail system takes 2.9 miles, but other configurations of hikes are possible. All of them start with the Island Trail.
Walk up the boardwalk and around the back of the concession stand, following the boardwalk into the beach scrub with its scattered cabbage palms. Just before you reach the “Along the Waterfront” kiosk at a T intersection of boardwalks, look for the “Island Trail” sign. Turn left. The trail meanders into the coastal scrub. At 0.2 mile, there is a trail guide box on the left. When you cross the jeep trail with the “Shortcut to Beach” sign at 0.6 mile, continue straight across.
After a mile of hiking, you reach a sign with a hiker symbol. Bear right, and turn left to follow the Hammock Loop. Walk softly along this cathedral of pines, one of Central Florida’s last remaining strands of virgin slash pine. Veering down to the left, you catch sight of the glimmering waters of Dunedin Pass. Enjoy a moment along the shore.
At 1.3 miles, you come to a tannic pond—a natural freshwater spring, the largest source of water on the island, with the remnants of a historic homestead nearby. The trail rises through the hammock back up into the pine flatwoods, passing through a seasonally wet area, before it completes the Hammock Loop. Turn right at the “Nature Trail” sign, and make an immediate left onto the Beach Trail.
A sign at the 2-mile mark indicates the marina is off to the left, back along the Shortcut Trail. Continue straight. The trail veers left, crossing over a bridge over a mangrove-lined canal and lagoon. Examine the mangroves closely for Louisiana heron, reddish egret, snowy egrets, and the rare but beautiful roseate spoonbill. Continue down the trail to the beach, walking between the windswept sea oats atop tall sand dunes. Turn right. Walk 0.5 mile up the beach until you reach a boardwalk, which leads you back to the beginning of the Island Trail.

Dag 12 Hillsborough SP - Crystal River

Via Homosassa Springs Wildlife SP When we were kids, Homosassa Springs was a roadside attraction, pre-Disney, showing off wildlife in a jungle-like setting. When Florida State Parks took it over, the park pulled in its focus strictly to Florida wildlife, and with a manatee rehab center on site, it’s one of the easiest places in Florida to see a manatee. It’s a showcase for Florida wildlife, from manatees to flamingos, otters to panthers. Photographers will appreciate the ability to get close as much as the kids will.
While the park still has a splashy front entrance along US 19, it takes a tour boat – included in the admission price – or a tram, or a walk, to get back to the main gate, which has its own parking area along Fishbowl Road.

Crystal River, you can immerse in the beauty of a palm and cedar hammock right across the street from the Crystal River Mall. A wooden boardwalk leads into jungle-like cabbage palm flatwoods, with a staircase to access the natural portion of the trail (called “Pathway to the Past”) that meanders through a bottomland hardwood forest with surface limestone out to a boardwalk into the estuary that borders Crystal River.
Mosquito repellent is strongly recommended. Wear sturdy shoes – no flip-flops – as you’ll stub your toes on rocks – yes, rocks – if you don’t. Trail markers are blue disks with silver arrows. Be cautious of poison ivy along the wild portion of the trail.

For a sampling of the fragile coastal habitats protected along St. Joseph Bay by St Joseph Peninsula State Park, take a short walk on this spectacularly scenic coastal trail. You’ll meander through a diminutive scrub forest where the delicate Florida rosemary, myrtle oak, and Chapman oak are gnarled and wizened like bonsai thanks to the persistent coastal breezes, and scramble up and over dunes covered in scrub forest to enjoy panoramas of the bay.
