After a few hours of confusion over whether passengers boarding flights in America could pack laptop computers and cell phones in their carry-on bags, the Transportation Security Administration has publicly issued an answer: Yes, they can.

Lara Uselding, spokeswoman for the TSA, confirmed today that such electronic items are allowed as carry-on items. She also said that passengers headed to the United Kingdom could carry them on board as well, though she didn’t know whether passengers leaving the UK would have to check the items.

Earlier confusion stemmed from a TSA e-mail sent to major airports across the country, said Vanessa Denha-Garmo, press secretary to County Executive Robert Ficano. The Free Press incorrectly reported earlier on its web site that laptops and cell phones were banned from carry on luggage.

mmm, wij gaan de 31e met US naar LA. Gelukkig zie ik op de site van US een zelfde soort bericht als wat Marijtje op de site van KLM tegenkwam (zie onderstaand bericht). Het is vervelend allemaal, maar veel vervelender dat het nodig is. Laten we maar beter hopen dat ernstige incidenten uitblijven en Scotland Yard ons heeft behoed voor een ramp. Laten we die veiligheidsregels dan maar op de koop toe nemen!

Customers should be advised that they will not be permitted to purchase liquid items from airport gift shops to take on the airplane with them. Those items will be confiscated at the gate. This applies to all flights to, from and within the United States.

Baggage policy for travel to/from the UK
For flights originating in the UK: Effective immediately all carryons are being treated as checked baggage and will not be permitted in the passenger cabin on board. For flights originating in the U.S. to the UK, carry-ons are permitted, but will be screened at security checkpoints.

The following measures apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport and from anywhere connecting in the US to the UK.

Nothing may be carried in passengers' pockets. Passengers may only take the following items through the airport security checkpoint, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag:

Pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (money, credit cards, identity cards, etc. but not handbags)
Travel documents essential for the journey (passports and travel tickets)
Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (a diabetic kit for example), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
Eyeglasses and sunglasses, without cases
Contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed
Tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
Keys (but no electrical key fobs)

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exception: Baby formula or breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines

Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

Wij zijn net terug uit Amerika en hebben geen nieuws gezien.
We wisten dan ook niet wat er in Engeland was gebeurt dat hoorden we pas op schiphol.
Op Lax waren ze bij de douane wel wat langzamer, en we moesten sauzen, water e.d. inleveren daar snapten we toen dus niets van.
Verder konden we onze handbagage gewoon meenemen.

ik vraag me af of Dell laptops ook in het vliegtuig mogen die hebben nogal de neiging om te ontploffen

Ps: ik vind het goed dat ze zulke strenge beveiliging doen maar als iemand echt wat zou willen aanrichten dan gaat dat makkelijk

Wij zijn woensdag vanuit SFO teruggevlogen. Gelukkig hadden wij wel het nieuws gevolgd en in ons motel lag -heel netjes - ook info met wat wel en niet in de handbagage meemocht.
We zijn op tijd naar het vliegveld gegaan maar dat bleek eigenlijk niet nodig. Van onze handbagage werden twee stuks (kleine koffers) handmatig gecontroleerd, de rest ging door de normale procedure.
Valt dus allemaal wel mee.

Van uit Zaventem (BRU) is het heel wat minder
Heb net gebeld. Laptop mag wel mee, maar geen oortjes of 2e batterij.
Als ik vroeg hoe ik de laptop als ontspanning kon gebruiken zeiden ze me dat de laptop werd toegelaten omdat sommige mensen bedrijfsgegevens er hebben op staan, maar dat het niet echt de bedoeling is dat je hem tijdens de reis gebruikt...
Verder slechts 1 boek en 1 tijdschrift PP.
En dat is alleen voor Belgie zo. De rest van Europa (zelfs UK) is veel soepelder. Waarom ??? geen idee.

Ik ben gisteren teruggekomen uit de VS.. op detroit werd ik naast de gewone procedures gefouilleerd, op heathrow, verschikkelijk. Op de heen weg deed ik 2 minuten over de beveiliging, nu een uur. Terwijl er geen eens zoveel meer gedaan wordt. Mensen worden afgetast en je moet je schoenen uitdoen.. Als je snel naar je volgende vlucht moet op heathrow, zorg dat je zsm uit het vliegtuig bent en REN naar secturity, anders heb je kans dat je het gewoon niet haalt.. zeker niet als je bv naar gate 23 in terminal 4 moet..
